McNichols shocks Menard!

A jam-packed crowd in the Rayne Civic Center in Rayne, Louisiana witnessing Chad Broussard’s Boxncar Promotions inaugural event was left stunned Saturday night as they watched their hometown hero laying on the canvas with the referee hovering over him bringing the fight to an abrupt end. And all this occurred inside the first 30 seconds of the first round.

In a much anticipated “Rumble In Rayne” main event clash, Gulfport, Mississippi native Carl McNichols (5-1) shocked an entire community by making quick work of Rayne’s own Mason Menard (2-1) by first stunning him then quickly putting the finishing touches together only 28 seconds inside the first stanza. After a short feeling out process McNichols proceeded to unleash a barrage of overhand rights on the 19-year-old former amateur standout with devastating results. After the final connection Menard fell to the floor in a heap. He made a strong attempt to get back to his feet but ended up crashing head first onto the canvas again forcing referee Russell Naquin to stop the bout. Saturday night’s accomplishment brings McNichols’ win total to five with all coming by way of knockout. This was Menard’s first professional loss of his career.

In the co-main event Breaux Bridge, Louisiana’s Jared "Leathel Weapon" Leblanc (3-0) ended Jerrick Stephens’ (2-13) attempt to win back to back fights by forcing Stephens to quit on a knee after knocking him down for the second time inside the first round. For most of the round Stephens was all over the ring attempting to avoid Leblanc’s attack. But to no avail. With the win Leblanc continues his undefeated campaign at welterweight. Shreveport’s Stephens falters to 2-13.

In an under card bout another local fighter, Jason Doucet (4-12), looked sharp in the first two rounds of his bout against Mobile, Alabama’s Mario Lacey (8-18) before being knocked out on his feet in the third. Doucet controlled the action for the most part until dropping his hands allowing Lacey to move in for the kill. And he took full advantage forcing referee Larry Berger to stop the bout before the end of the third round.

Olympic heavyweight alternante turned pro Quantis Graves (1-0) made his much anticipated debut against a game Phillip Hammac (4-21), winning a 4 round unanimous decision. Graves, a native of New Orleans, employed an excellent body attack along with an all around busier performance to ensure his first professional victory.

RING RULERS: The Real Deal Results

Ring Rulers once again brought down the house this past Friday night (August 15th) as “The Real Deal” had the fight fans that crowded the Municipal Auditorium in Shreveport, LA, up on their feet cheering for more of the all out amateur MMA action, which included fourteen fights for the night.

The main event was a barn burner of a bout as tough Texan Mitchell Thelen (7-1) successfully defended his Ring Rulers middleweight Texas title by defeating Shreveport’s very own John Wesley Reed (2-1) in a three round war.

As round one of the fight began the two fighters went right into action with Reed taking down Thelen to the canvas, and when the two reached their feet it would be Thelen who would take down Reed.

Reed who was not afraid to throw the spinning back fist threw many for the night but ended up eating a plethora of unanswered punches from Thelen which ended the action of the opening round.

Round two had Thelen controlling the ground game trying to gain a submission via arm bar but Reed would have nothing of the sort as he battled on bloodied up continuing his spinning back fists which were taking some toll on Thelen, but the two both continued to wage war for the remainder of the bout with both having their moments. When it was all said an done the judges scored the bout 29-28 across the board giving the split decision win to Mitchell Thelen.

After the fight, an excited Mitchell Thelen had this to say about the fight and out come, “it was a close fight”, Mitchell explained, “Reed was tough, he was strong, he slung me around a few times but when I was on top I made it count”.

After the bout both fighters showed great sportsmanship, and Thelen ended the post fight interview with, “he had a pretty spinning back fist, which was pretty affective, but the one thing I had was the experience, Reed is a class act.”

The semi-co-main-event featured fan favorite J.R. Fuller (4-1) who kept his Ring Rulers 173-pound Louisiana title in tact as he took out the Tim Myers (4-4) in two rounds.

“Captain Cavemen” took the fight to Myers in what was a tactical first round, which featured a lot of grappling and ground game which was in Fuller’s favor.

It would appear that round two would be more of the same but Fuller had other plans for the night as he launched an assault sweeping Myers to the canvas. For a second it would appear that Myers was getting the best of Fuller hitting J.R. with multiple shots, but the tough as nails Fuller took the blows and administered a body lock that ended the fight and the night for Myers in just thirty-seven seconds in the second round.

Shreveport’s very own hard headed Joey Freid (6-2) took on Alexandria’s all around tough guy Cecil Stroud (3-4) and after taking some serious shots from the power puncher, the youngster took it to the ground and utilized his ground game choking out Stroud at a 1:30 in the first round giving the twenty-four year old the win via (rear naked choke).

The night also featured the Cox brothers battling in separate bouts, and both earning first round victories. Brian Cox (2-0) knocked out Brandon Spurlock (0-1)at 2:48 in the opening round, while Brad Cox (3-0) took out Jackie Brown in just twenty-nine seconds of round one.

The card also featured one professional bout between the 133-pounder Blake Franklin (2-1) who defeated the 129-pound Trevor Robbins (0-2) via referee stoppage at 1:13 in the first round.

The night featured a slew of great fights and once again Ring Rulers proved supreme when it come to amateur fighting.

This Friday night (August 15th) from Shreveport, Louisiana’s famed Municipal Auditorium, Ring Rulers roles back into town featuring twenty-six combatants of the amateur mixed martial arts who will go toe to toe in a thirteen bout card billed as, “The Real Deal”.

The main event, which has been labeled by both competitors as a potential war, features the tough Texan Mitchell Thelen (6-1), who will be making the first defense of his Ring Rulers 170-pound Texas title, when he takes on Louisiana’s very own John Wesley Reed (2-0).

Thelen earned the title this past May by defeating all around tough guy Joey Freid, and all though this is his first defense of the strap, Mitchell states, “I prepare the same way, and at the end of it all I will be holding the belt again!”

His opponent, the nineteen year old John Wesley Reed strongly states, “there is no fear in either of us, we don’t have any quit, it is going to be a war!” Mitchell agrees with Reed in saying, “I agree, it is going to be a war,” and Mitchell went on to say, “I am not going to give up my title that easily.”

The co-main event features the hard headed and always entertaining Joey “DieHard” Freid (5-3), who will no doubt put his hard head to use as he takes on the heavy handed Cecil Stroud (3-3) in what the two declare will be a barn burner of a bout.

Stroud, who made his fighting debut at the age of thirty-two looks forward to taking on Joey, and demands that the one thing you can expect out of this throw down is non stop action.

The bout will also feature Bossier City’s very own crowd pleaser J.R. Fuller (3-1) who will be taking on Texan Tim Myers. Fuller gives his candid thoughts on Myers in saying, “I have seen him, but he is just another guy,” but warns his opponent, “Come prepared, because I come forward and just keep on coming.”

There will be many more bouts on for the night, in what will no doubt be a great night of all out non stop action.

FIGHTER PROFILE: Joey Freid

“I will fight with everything I have!”

Bumps, bruises and blood, just a part of the everyday life of the twenty-one year MMA fighter Joey “DieHard” Freid (5-3), and come this Friday night at the Municipal Auditorium in Shreveport, LA, the young fighter will be doing what he loves most, throwing down. And Freid has a tough customer in front of him in the hard hitting Cecil Stroud, but it is a challenge that Joey gladly accepts and strongly demands, will be a great show.

A fighter he is, but at one time, fighting was something he did not do. From being a oversized kid tipping the scales at 280-pounds, and getting jumped and suffering a beat down, Joey went on a mission to lose weight, and in doing so found the fighter inside him that rules his ways today.

After two years of studying Ju-Jitsu, Joey, who stands at 6’1” weighs in around the 170 mark, and has fought in eight amateur bouts for Ring Rulers, looks to a bright future in the fight business in hopes of one day stepping in as a pro. And come this Friday night “DieHard” takes another step towards his goals as he takes center stage in what is being anticipated as a heck of a throw down. In this exclusive interview we get the thoughts on the young fighter as he talks about his career and what is to come, enjoy.

What inspired you to become a fighter?

The reason I started because I was a fat kid, I was around 280-pounds, I got jumped outside of a Circle K, and got my butt beat a little and it scared me. So I said to myself that I needed to learn how to fight. So I started Jiu-Jitsu and I found out that I really enjoyed the competition and fighting and I have not looked back since, I really enjoy fighting.

What were your emotions making the walk to the ring for your first fight?

SF
I was kind of goofy to be honest, I was excited to be there, I was there to have fun. I was trying to get the crowed hyped, I am not one of those intense fighters, in fact one of the nick names that I wanted to use was, Joey “The Goofy Bastard” Freid, but nobody will let me use it. But I do come out there goofy, I am just happy to be there and fight.

What do you feel your best qualities are as a fighter?

SF
I am hard to knock out.

BH
Yeah, I seen you on You Tube and you took some punches, and from what I have seen you can take some shots.

SF
Man, I will send you this fight, you know who Cale Grady is?

BH
Yes, I know Cale.

SF
I fought him in my second fight, I beat him for the sole reason that he could not knock me out. For a round and a half he beat on my face, kicked me in the head, punched me until he was so tired that he could not stand up anymore. I kneed him a couple of times and got on top of him and was able to win. I have pretty good Jiu-Jitsu, I have a pretty good guard, but my main strengths are that I have a hard head and I am to stupid to quit.

BH
Having a hard head, and being to stupid to quit, per say, it can be a blessing and a curse. Do you ever worry about getting seriously hurt in this game?

SF
I am worried about that, my last fight I was hit in the left side of my head and fought the rest of the fight blind in my left eye. It sacred me, but fighting is an addiction, I cannot not do it. I tried to quit but I could not do it. (Laughs)

What does your family think about you fighting?

SF
They love it, my family comes out whenever they can, my Mom has been to all but one of my fights, she hates it when take a lot of punishment and gets mad and tells me, don’t make me take my shoe off and get in the ring because I will beat your butt boy. (Laughs) They love the fact that I am a fighter and they support me.

What has it been like working with Ring Rulers?

SF
It has been great, I have learned a lot about the behind the scenes of the fight game, to work with these guys and see how the game works really helps because when I do go pro I will be able to understand more how things work.

BH
The hardest aspect of being a fighter?

SF
For me it is the diet, I used to be 280-pounds, I love to eat. I enjoy working out and all the training, but when it comes to eating a salad or a cheese burger, that is the hardest aspect of being a fighter for me.

BH
What is the best aspect of being a fighter?

SF
The comradely for one thing, being a fighter there is a certain comradely between certain fighters. There is a special feeling about being a fighter.

BH
You will be taking on Cecil Stroud this Friday night, you two have fought on the same card before, from what you have seen of him what are your thoughts on him?

SF
Cecil, we are actually friends, when I found out that I was going to fight him I called him up and we were making fun of each other a little bit, but Cecil is a great guy. He is strong, he has heavy hands, I have seen him knock a couple guys out. I am looking forward to fighting him, it is going to be a good test, I have been working on my standup in boxing. When we get in there he is going to throw down and I am going to throw down, then afterwards we are going to be cool.

What can the fight fans expect out of you come fight night?

SF
They can expect me to put on a good show, win or lose I am going to put on a show, I will fight with everything I have.

FIGHTER PROFILE: Cecil Stroud

Age is just a number!

Telling a man that he cannot reach his goals for whatever reason is dictating their life, pressing them away from their highest potential, but one man stands strong and firm from others control, especially when it comes to his fighting career, thirty-two year old MMA fighter Cecil Stroud (3-3) is living proof that age is just a number, and the hard hitter controls his own destiny.

Stroud, a Louisiana native was a natural born athlete, from playing ball in high school and in college, Stroud went on to play ball in the pros, catching for his hometown Alexandria Aces, but after retiring from the sport Cecil filled the void with fighting, and in just nine months Stroud has competed in six amateur MMA bouts. And coming up this Friday night at the Municipal Auditoruim in Shreveport, LA, Stroud will throw down in his lucky number seventh bout as he takes on Joey Freid (5-3) in a 170-pound clash on Ring Rulers “The Real Deal” card.

From plumbing to punching, to coaching baseball to bringing out blood, the father of three is living his dream of fathering and fighting, and nobody is telling this hard hitter how to live.

What inspired you to become a fighter?

I was drinking one night watching the UFC, all my buddies were like we could do that, so come Monday morning I was the only one who showed up for training so I stuck with it. It is an adrenaline rush, it filled a void that was left when I quit playing baseball.

Your debut at thirty-two, were there Nay Sayers telling you that you were to old to fight?

CS
Oh yeah, my Dad still wonders why I do it, my Mom will not watch any of my fights. I won a fight in fifty-eight seconds and she will not even watch the video on it. There are still plenty of my buddies who say that I don’t need to be doing this and that I am to old.

BH
What were your emotions making the walk to the ring for your first fight?

CS
(Laughs) Man, I was jacked up. You can look at the video, I had three people walking out with me and I was out there twenty yards ahead of them. Everybody laughs when they see the video, I was bouncing around like Tito Ortiz, I was a foot off the ground. I did not hear anything or see anything, all I seen was the guy across from me.

BH
What do you feel your best qualities are as a fighter?

CS
My strength, I came down in weight and I kept a lot of my strength. I have above normal bench press and above normal squat.

BH
How has it been fighting under the Ring Rulers banner?

CS
It has been working good, they are real good guys, they treat me right, they stay in contact a lot, they don’t mind cutting up with you. I had a lot of questions when I started this fight game and they answered them for me.

BH
You’ll be facing Joey Freid, what are your thoughts on Joey?

CS
Joey, he is a great guy. This is going to be a very entertaining fight, if you can make it to the fight you need to make it up there. Joey has a strong chin, he likes to kick, he don’t mind getting hit in the face so I am going to test him and see if he has come across somebody who hits as hard as me.

BH
What can the fight fans expect out of Cecil Stroud come fight night?

CS
AH, same as normal, non stop action, once the action starts I do not stop, I am constantly going to be moving and putting fists in his face.

BH
I guess you are living proof us older dogs can still do it.

CS
That’s it, that’s what I say, I don’t think thirty-two is old, I really don’t. You look at all these cats in football, they are all in there late twenties early thirties, I feel that I have a good ten years of fighting left in me.

John Wesley Reed throws his heart into new sport

Like a lot of ex-high school football players, former Crimson Tide football player John Wesley Reed (Minden High Class of ‘07) was looking for something to fill the void left after football. That’s when he found mixed martial arts.

“After I finished up with football, I still wanted to compete,” he said. “And I thought I would give this a try. I had watched it on TV and just got into it.”

And into it he is, only 13 months into his mixed martial arts (MMA) career, Reed has a 2-0 record with both wins coming against highly ranked opponents.

His first match came against Robbie Dennis, a match that Reed talked his way into.

“I had trained about nine or 10 months and I thought I was ready to fight,” Reed said. “Nobody wanted to take the fight against Dennis, so I told them I would fight him. I figured I didn’t have anything to lose and I pulled the upset. I busted on the scene with a big win.”

Reed then took on Justin Miller, a 15-year veteran of MMA, and again scored the upset. And after that fight, Reed talked his way into another fight, this one a title fight with Mitchell Falin August 15 at the Shreveport Municipal Auditorium.

“This match has kind of been thrown into his lap,” Reed’s trainer Albert Cole said. “At his last fight he put on a wonderful show and afterwards he kind of spoke up a bit and said he would love a title match in the future. I guess they took him to mean immediately, so he’s been busting his rear end to put his money where his mouth is. We’re going to see if we can’t take that title.”

Cole, the former owner of Impact Martial Arts in Bossier City, has been training Reed since he began 13 months ago. And he sees a lot of potential in his fighter.

“He has a lot of heart and he trains very hard,” Cole said. “He came in not knowing a lot about the sport, except what he had seen on TV, and we’ve basically worked from the ground up. He’s done a great job and I would think that if he continues on the path he’s on, with the attitude and the work ethic he has, I think that he could, after some more amateur fights, take it to the professional level and be quite successful with it.”

Reed, a former linebacker for the Crimson Tide, likens his present sport to his former one.

“I played linebacker in football and you have to have the same type of aggressiveness for MMA,” he said. “You have to bring that killer instinct over to the ring. I still wanted to put a lick on people, so here I am.”
Cole thinks Reed’s aggressiveness and hard work is the key to his early success.

“John Wesley has a great attitude and he’s always working hard,” he said. “He’s always looking for a more intense workout and for fighting opportunities. As long as he keeps his head on straight and keeps everything moving forward, he’ll do an exceptional job.”

Reed gives his trainer all the credit for helping him get where he is.

“I really want to thank Mr. Cole,” Reed said. “I want to thank him for all he’s done for me. He’s really raised me up from nothing.”

Competing in MMA is time consuming and expensive. Reed presently has no sponsors, so his expenses come out of his own pocket.

“It costs a lot,” he said. “I train in Bossier and what’s killing me right now is that I have to drive over there four or five times a week, and the gas prices are so high.”

Reed had a big local turnout for his last fight and he’s hoping for more of the same August 15.

“I want everybody to come out and see me fight and really give me a home field advantage for the title fight,” he said. “It’s awesome when you’re up in the ring and when they call your name, you hear all your friends and family cheering for you.”

If Reed continues to fight as he has in his first two fights, there will be plenty of fans, not including friends and family, cheering him on.

Stroud easily handles opponent at Rumble on the River

The 32-year-old, 170-pound Stroud (3-3) squared off against MMA newcomer Kevin Reeves (0-1) at the Rumble on the River, the first local fight production for Shreveport-based Ring Rulers.The fight marked the beginning of Reeves' amateur MMA career. He accepted it with just two-hours notice.Reeves landed the initial strikes in the first round with a few wild punches. Stroud answered by tackling and slamming his opponent violently to the ground. The pair wrestled for advantage before returning to their feet.Once up, Stroud again brought Reeves down on the mat and eventually won the match in the first by submission.About the winning hold, a rear-naked chokehold, Stroud said Reeves "just rolled into it." Stroud said he wouldn't call his ground skills strong. Rather, he said, he just has a ground game.Trainer Dan Gilliland said Stroud looked slick on the ground. Stroud was able to apply a few submission holds before getting the winning hold, said Gilliland, who heads up SIFT MMA in Tioga. He described his fighter as a "big 170" with phenomenal strength.As for his opponent, Stroud voiced major respect for Reeves' taking the fight with such short notice."It takes big (guts) to get in that ring. It takes even bigger (guts) to get in the ring with just two hours notice," Stroud said following his victory.Talk of turning professional followed this most-recent win. Stroud plans on fighting his last amateur fight in September and turning pro by November. It's a decision he knows not to take lightly.The competition at the next level is a whole lot tougher than now, Stroud said.Kris Lee, also of SIFT MMA, was the second local fighter scheduled for a bout at the Ring Ruler's event. But he did not enter the ring. Gilliand said three different opponents backed out of fighting the 181-pound Lee, a 1-0 amateur and Louisiana College student.

New promotion making MMA inroads in Alexandria!

Local boy Cecil Stroud will enter the ring Saturday night as the main event in the first local fight promotion by Ring Rulers, a Shreveport-based promoter of amateur mixed martial arts bouts.

Stroud, 32, will enter the ring at 170 pounds and with a 2-3 record. He'll be squaring off against Texas native Scott Nix, who has a 0-2 record, according to www.ringrulers.com.While the event marks Stroud's first headline, it also marks the entrance of Ring Rulers into Alexandria's MMA market, an area once dominated by promoter Dana Pitcher.

Chad Davis, Ring Rulers' events promoter, described the upcoming show as a "trimmed down version" to previous ones. For example, the fights will only take up one-half of the Riverfront Center.Davis said his intent within this market is to build a strong amateur program and eventually introduce professional shows. His goal is to have six amateur fights at the Riverfront in 2009."Our show is the MMA equivalent to Friday night football," Davis said. "I think the amateur thing here in Alexandria will be huge."Stroud is also looking at the event as a way to build up.He calls this upcoming fight the hardest one he's ever trained for. Since first entering the ring in November, Stroud said he's managed to fight about every six weeks. His goal is to build up his MMA record before turning pro this coming November.

Helping him in this endeavor is Dan Gilliland, the trainer at SIFT MMA in Tioga. He is also the sensai at Rapides School of Keichu Ryu Karate, where SIFT is housed.Gilliland has trained men and women in karate for more than 20 years at his Rapides school. He's been training fighters in the multi-faceted discipline of MMA for more than a year.About Stroud, Gilliland said, "he's been training like a madman."Stroud came to SIFT MMA about two months ago. In that time, he said, Gilliland's tutelage has greatly improved his ground skills.

Fellow SIFT fighter Kris Lee will also be on Saturday's ticket. Described as a "phenomenal athlete" by Gilliland, Lee, a student at Louisiana College, will step into the ring with a 1-0 record.Of his two fighters' chances, Gilliland said, "I'm pretty confident with these guys."As for the fight promoters, Gilliland said Ring Rulers' Shreveport shows have been great."Their matches, by in large, are extremely even," he said.Gilliland added that Ring Rulers seems genuinely concerned about the fighters' safety. And he expects the action on Saturday night to be a "good value for what they're charging" local fight fans.

After a tentative start, Jones began to show some life on his feet. Grigar got the fight to the ground in the second round and nearly caught Jones in several submissions. However, in the third round, Jones did a ton of damage on his feet and dropped Grigar with a roundhouse left. The referee stopped the fight on the ground moments later.

Krantz was in control from the get go. Less than a minute in, Krantz leveled Hall with a right and knocked him out cold.
Welterweight Division (170)
Brent Mason (1-0) def. George Sweeney (0-2), corner stoppage after Round 1
Sweeney came out strong, but Mason recovered well and stunned Sweeney with some knees late in the first round. Mason’s late flurry of knees likely shut Sweeney’s left eye. Sweeney’s corner threw in the towel after the opening round.
Welterweight Division
James White (7-10) vs. Charlie Rader (3-2) Rader wins` by TKO due to strikes, 1:48 of Round 1
Rader took the fight to White almost from the beginning, powering right hand after right hand to a mostly prone White. After both fighters regained their footing, Rader’s punching strength was evident, knocking White to the ground where Rader finished the fight 1:48 into the first round.
Light Heavyweight Division
Brandon McDowell (27-23) def. Doug Williams (5-5), neck crank, 1:17 of Round 2
McDowell brings Williams into side control and tries to work a choke. Williams tries reversal and is successful late in the round. Wild right connects. Tries guillotine but couldn’t secure it before the round ends.
Williams slams McDowell to begin round 2 but winds up in his guard. McDowell works a quick submission to end the bout.
Middleweight Division
Cale Grady (1-0) def. Ryan Chavarria (0-1), KO, :02 of Round 1
TWO SECONDS! Grady and Chavarria both connect. Chavarria is taken out on a stretcher and Grady, although severely stunned, gets the win.
Featherweight Division
Josh Pulsifer (8-2) def. Warren Stewart (7-5), unanimous decision, all judges 30-27
Very technical fight early as both fighters enjoyed success on the ground. Stewart escapes a rear-naked choke at the end of Round 1. Second round starts the same, but Pulsifer gains an advantage by taking full mount against the cage. He begins to rain down punches on Stewart, but he defended well. Pulsifer garnered a full mount again in the final round, but Stewart was able to reverse. A haymaker from Stewart lands while Pulsifer is on the ground late in the third round.
Bantamweight Division
Will Campuzano (1-0) def. Trevor Robbins (0-1), TKO due to strikes at :48 of Round 1
It was all Campuzano in this one.
Main event
Chris Bell (3-0) vs. Dustin Proctor (2-0) Bell wins by rear naked choke, 1:25 of Round 2
The biggest fight of the night started off with a bang as both fighters exchanged big swings and bigger connections. Bell had Proctor under control for most of Round 1, gaining an advantage on the ground and letting loose with a flurry of punches.
